    Four-wave mixing in a silicon microring resonator using a self-pumping geometry

    We report on four-wave mixing in a silicon microring resonator using a self-pumping scheme instead of an external laser. The ring resonator is inserted in an external-loop cavity with a fibered semiconductor amplifier as a source of gain. The silicon microring acts as a filter and we observe lasing in one of the microring's resonances. We study correlations between signal and idler generated beams using a Joint Spectral Density experiment

    Measurements of cosmic expansion and growth rate of structure from voids in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey between redshift 0.07 and 1.0

    We present measurements of the anisotropic cross-correlation of galaxies and cosmic voids in data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Main Galaxy Sample (MGS), Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) and extended BOSS (eBOSS) luminous red galaxy catalogues from SDSS Data Releases 7, 12 and 16, covering the redshift range 0.07<z<1.00.07<z<1.0. As in our previous work analysing voids in subsets of these data, we use a reconstruction method applied to the galaxy data before void-finding in order to remove selection biases when constructing the void samples. We report results of a joint fit to the multipole moments of the measured cross-correlation for the growth rate of structure, fσ8(z)f\sigma_8(z), and the ratio DM(z)/DH(z)D_\mathrm{M}(z)/D_\mathrm{H}(z) of the comoving angular diameter distance to the Hubble distance, in six redshift bins. For DM/DHD_\mathrm{M}/D_\mathrm{H}, we are able to achieve a significantly higher precision than that obtained from analyses of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and galaxy clustering in the same datasets. Our growth rate measurements are of lower precision but still comparable with galaxy clustering results. For both quantities, the results agree well with the expectations for a Λ\LambdaCDM model. Assuming a flat Universe, our results correspond to a measurement of the matter density parameter Ωm=0.3370.029+0.026\Omega_\mathrm{m}=0.337^{+0.026}_{-0.029}. For more general models the degeneracy directions obtained are consistent with and complementary to those from other cosmological probes.     QRouteMe: A Multichannel Information System to Ensure Rich User-Experience in Exhibits and Museums

    In this article the QRouteMe system is presented. QRouteMe is a multichannel information system built to ensure rich user experiences in exhibits and museums. The system starts from basic information about a particular exhibit or museum while delivering a wide user experience based on different distribution channels. The organization of the systems’ components allow to build different solutions that can be simultaneously delivered on different media. A wide range of media from touch-screen installations to portable devices like smartphones have been used. The used devices can communicate each others to increase the usability and the user experience for the visitors. Another important feature of the system is the definition of an inexpensive auto-localization system based on fiduciary marks distributed all around the building. In this article the system is presented from an architectural and functional point of view. A case study and analysis of experimental results are also provided in a real environment where the system was deployed

    Sediment contamination by heavy metals and PAH in the Piombino Channel (Tyrrhenian Sea).

    Sediment contamination is of major concern in areas affected by heavy maritime traffic. The spatial variation and contamination of 11 trace elements and 17 PAHs in surface sediments were studied along a 31 km transect along the seaway from the port of Piombino (Tuscany) to the port of Portoferraio (Elba Island) in the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea. Heavy metal contamination was detected at sites near Piombino (Ni, Pb, Hg, Cu and Zn) and at sites near Portoferraio (Pb, Zn, Hg, Cr and Cd). Each of the 35 sampled sites showed PAH contamination, with the highest concentrations at sites near Portoferraio. The most abundant isomers detected were 2- and 4-ring PAHs. PAH ratio analysis showed a prevalence of PAHs of pyrolytic origin. High values of PAHs and heavy metals were related to high sediment water content, TOC, silt, and clay content. Arsenic increased with increasing depth. The correlation between concentrations of metals and PAHs suggests common anthropogenic sources and is of concern for possible synergistic adverse effects on the biota

    Beyond two-point statistics: using the minimum spanning tree as a tool for cosmology

    Cosmological studies of large-scale structure have relied on two-point statistics, not fully exploiting the rich structure of the cosmic web. In this paper we show how to capture some of this cosmic web information by using the minimum spanning tree (MST), for the first time using it to estimate cosmological parameters in simulations. Discrete tracers of dark matter such as galaxies, N-body particles or haloes are used as nodes to construct a unique graph, the MST, that traces skeletal structure. We study the dependence of the MST on cosmological parameters using haloes from a suite of COmoving Lagrangian Acceleration (COLA) simulations with a box size of 250 h−1Mpc⁠, varying the amplitude of scalar fluctuations (As), matter density (Ωm), and neutrino mass (∑mν). The power spectrum P and bispectrum B are measured for wavenumbers between 0.125 and 0.5 hMpc−1⁠, while a corresponding lower cut of ∼12.6 h−1Mpc is applied to the MST. The constraints from the individual methods are fairly similar but when combined we see improved 1σ constraints of ∼17 per cent (⁠∼12 per cent⁠) on Ωm and ∼12 per cent (⁠∼10 per cent⁠) on As with respect to P (P + B) thus showing the MST is providing additional information. The MST can be applied to current and future spectroscopic surveys (BOSS, DESI, Euclid, PSF, WFIRST, and 4MOST) in 3D and photometric surveys (DES and LSST) in tomographic shells to constrain parameters and/or test systematics

    Cosmological measurements from void-galaxy and galaxy-galaxy clustering in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

    We present the cosmological implications of measurements of void-galaxy and galaxy-galaxy clustering from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Main Galaxy Sample (MGS), Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), and extended BOSS (eBOSS) luminous red galaxy catalogues from SDSS Data Release 7, 12, and 16, covering the redshift range 0.07<z<1.00.07 < z < 1.0. We fit a standard Λ\LambdaCDM cosmological model as well as various extensions including a constant dark energy equation of state not equal to 1-1, a time-varying dark energy equation of state, and these same models allowing for spatial curvature. Results on key parameters of these models are reported for void-galaxy and galaxy-galaxy clustering alone, both of these combined, and all these combined with measurements from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and supernovae (SN). For the combination of void-galaxy and galaxy-galaxy clustering plus CMB and SN, we find tight constraints of Ωm=0.3127±0.0055\Omega_\mathrm{m} = 0.3127\pm 0.0055 for a base Λ\LambdaCDM cosmology, Ωm=0.3172±0.0061,w=0.930±0.039\Omega_\mathrm{m} = 0.3172\pm 0.0061, w = -0.930\pm 0.039 additionally allowing the dark energy equation of state ww to vary, and Ωm=0.3239±0.0085,w=0.889±0.052,and Ωk=0.0031±0.0028\Omega_\mathrm{m} = 0.3239\pm 0.0085, w = -0.889\pm 0.052, \mathrm{and}\ \Omega_\mathrm{k} = -0.0031\pm 0.0028 further extending to non-flat models.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures.     Microbiota of Deciduous Endodontic Infections Analyzed by MDA and Checkerboard DNA-DNA Hybridization

    Aims To evaluate the microbiota of endodontic infections in deciduous teeth by checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization after uniform amplification of DNA in samples by multiple displacement amplification (MDA). Methodology Forty samples from the root canal system of deciduous teeth exhibiting pulp necrosis with or without radiographically detectable periradicular/interadicular bone resorption were collected and 32 were analyzed, with 3 individuals contributing 2 samples; these were MDA- amplified and analyzed by Checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization for levels of 83 bacterial taxa. Two outcome measures were used: the percentage of teeth colonized by each species; and the mean proportion of each bacterial taxon present across all samples were computed. Results The mean amount of DNA in the samples prior to amplification was 5.2 (± 4.7) ng and 6.1 (± 2.3) μg after MDA. The mean number of species detected per sample was 19 (± 4) (range: 3–66) to the nearest whole number. The most prevalent taxa were Prevotella intermedia (96.9%), Neisseria mucosa (65.6%), Prevotella nigrescens (56.2%) and Tannerella forsythia (56.2%). Aggregatibacter (Haemophilus) aphrophilus and Helicobacter pylori were not detected. P. intermedia (10%), Prevotella tannerae (7%) and Prevotella nigrescens (4.3%) presented the highest mean proportions of the target species averaged across the positive samples. Conclusion Root canals of infected deciduous teeth had a diverse bacterial population. Prevotella sp were commonly found with P. intermedia, Prevotella tannerae and Prevotella nigrescens among the most prominent species detected
